Dr Alan Bye
Alan Bye is Vice President Technology – Strategy and Innovation at BHP Billiton. Alan, along with his global team, is accountable for defining the technology strategy and execution of technology development programs across the company. This includes responsibility for strategic partnerships, emerging technology, innovation hubs, enterprise architecture, technology capability, technology improvement and intellectual property management. He works closely with BHP Billiton stakeholders, including technology companies, R&D centres and Universities, and focuses on advancing the technology interests of BHP Billiton globally.
Prior to this Alan lead the establishment and was the managing director at the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction. CRC ORE is a ~$100m collaboration between 25 mining, METS and university organisations focussed on innovating the mining value chain.
Preceding that role Alan held the position of Professor and Director of the Bryan Research Centre (BRC) at the University of Queensland. The BRC’s research excellence is recognised in the fields of mass mining, blasting engineering and geology-mine-plant integration. Alan developed and led a cross discipline R&D team working on mining projects across a range of commodities and international locations.
Alan has an extensive mining operational background, spending 10 years with Anglo American where he held a range of senior operational and corporate positions. He has worked on over 30 operational sites across a broad range of commodities and countries delivering technology projects. Alan holds a PhD in mining engineering, a BSC <em>Hons</em> in engineering geology and a BSc in geology and hydrology.
Alan is a board member of the CSIRO – Minerals Resources Flagship Advisory Council and the METS Ignite – Research and Innovation Advisory Council.
