A safe, sustainable and proven alternative to tailings dams

Tailings dams pose a substantial risk, and residue management clearly needs to change. Alfa Laval is leading that transformation. Alfa Laval’s solid-liquid separation solutions are an effective, proven, high capacity solution for dewatering coal tailings and mine wastewater. They are also an effective solution for recovering fine coal from flotation concentrate as well as from lean streams. The dewatering technology produces a cake with up to 70% dry solids by mass, which can then be used for co-disposal with coarse rejects.

Solid-bowl centrifuge technology has evolved over the years and Alfa Laval has further developed it to make the technology more robust and suitable for applications in the mining industry. Dewatering of mine tailings is one of the key areas that we focus on, helping our customers eliminate the need for tailings dams. Today we have successful installations for dewatering tailings in Coal, Oil Sands (mature fine tailings), Borax, Nickel & Cobalt, with reference sites in Australia, North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The technology is suitable for various mineral processing applications including fine coal dewatering, lithium processing, kaolin classification, and calcium carbonate dewatering.

The separated solids can be used for either dry stacking (in some cases by co-disposal with coarse rejects), paste backfill or land reclamation. The process also allows to recover and re-use large quantities of process water, which helps reduce lifecycle cost, minimise environmental impact, mitigate risk of dam failures, save space and boost capacity.
