Australia needs an integrated approach to meet future energy challenges, global mining and energy giant GFG Alliance told the International Mining and Resources Conference in Melbourne today.
Executive Chairman, Sanjeev Gupta, said the framework his company envisaged involved a focus on sustainable energy balanced by mechanisms to ensure reliability. These could include pumped hydro. The efficiency of distribution could be improved by locating generation closer to demand, reducing losses in transmission.
GFC Alliance has more than 11,000 employees across more than 30 countries and has mining, steel, energy, finance and engineering operations. In Australia, their operations include integrated mining, production and port facilities in South Australia including Australian steelmaker Arrium.
Mr Gupta said the focus in Australia was creating a sustainable value proposition.
