Dalton Xie has more than 25 years experience in mining and commodity businesses including iron ore, pig iron & steel, copper, gold, manganese ore, chrome ore and graphite. He started his business career with Minmetals in the mid-1980s. After completing his postgraduate studies in Australia, he was employed with Rio Tinto in Perth and Shanghai. Dalton was the first expatriate of Hamersley Iron of Rio Tinto establishing direct sale of iron ore in Shanghai as a Sales Manager in 1995.
Prior to forming his own company United Overseas Resources Ltd. (UORES) a mineral investment and trading house in Hong Kong, he worked with Cargill the world largest private company as Manager Ferrous Raw Materials North Asia covering China, Korea and Taiwan for steel-making raw materials of iron ore, pig iron and scraps. He is also a co-founder of Cargill’s iron ore business and trading unit, which has become one of the largest iron ore traders in the world.
Dalton has also participated in significant projects, such as Channar Iron Ore JV between Rio Tinto and Sinosteel – the largest Chinese mineral investment overseas in the 20th Century, and strategic consultation such as Jindal Steel Pelletising Project in India. He has an excellent knowledge and experience of managing business in a cross-culture environment. Furthermore he has provided advice to a number of resource juniors as a consultant and has worked as a representative on the behalf of these companies in China.
As the inaugural chairman of the Hong Kong-based Kangaroo Mining Club (KMC), Dalton acts as a private ambassador helping foster the business relationships between the Australian mining companies and their Chinese counterparts. Under his leadership, KMC has now been well recognised as a resourceful platform for the mining & resources industries between Australia and China.
With both a Chinese and Australian education background, he has an MBA from Griffith University, Graduate Certificate of Mineral Economics from Western Australia School of Mines/Curtin University and a BA from Sichuan International Studies University in China.
