Mariette Bylsma was appointed General Manager Yandicoogina Operations, Rio Tinto in February 2018. Prior to her current role, Mariette spent 2.5 years as general manager Project Services, based in Brisbane Australia. She was responsible for leading a multi discipline project support team in developing value maximizing strategies for both study and implementation stages, and accountable for service delivery of project controls, procurement, contracts, risk and assurance to mega projects in Australia, the United States and Canada.
Mariette has championed change and business transformation; during 2017 she led the implementation of the Rio Tinto Projects Lean In Construction program across a global portfolio of projects.
Mariette’s mining career started in South Africa with BHP Billiton in 2005. She moved to Australia in 2008 and held a number of leadership roles across BHP’s manganese, nickel and iron ore businesses. Mariette joined Rio Tinto in 2013 as manager Hydrogeology drilling. She has a diverse background having worked in HSEC, business planning and strategy, project services and operations.
Mariette holds a National Diploma in Industrial Engineering from the Tswane University of Technolgy in South Africa and a Bachelor Degree in Technology management from the Hanze University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Mariette speaks English and Afrikaans having grown up in South Africa.
