In 2018, Sara Prendergast was named in the Top 100 Globally Inspiring Women in Mining after working in the Australian mining industry for over 15 years living in a range of remote outback locations across a variety of commodities.
She is a Senior Finance professional with Orica leading the performance reporting for their largest division of Australia, Pacific and Asia. Her career has seen her taken on challenges such a ~$30bn expansion project closure, $4bn asset overhaul, managing salvage of assets >$125m, finance and commercial system and process improvements, lead finance function transformations, design and implement and in some cases restore financial governance of mining organisations, lead major multi-million cost improvement initiatives and strategy formation during boom and bust.
Sara is a Director on The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) board during a period of major transformation. AusIMM is the peak body for mining professionals and represents >13,000 mining professionals globally. AusIMM delivers an ongoing program of professional development services to ensure members are supported throughout their careers enabling them to provide high-quality professional input to industry and the community. In this role, she has contributed to developing a strategy that modernises the definition of what is a mining professional beyond geology and engineering. Sara is also a member of AusIMM’s Audit and Risk Committee, Investment Committee, and Council for Diversity & Inclusion.
In 2017, she was granted a scholarship to research how to attract women in operational roles. Following the research paper’s release, she has consulted on the topic with many organisations as well as speaking engagements with the Minerals Council of Australia, WIMnet – NSW, Rio Tinto, NAWIC, NAWO, and Downer to assist in building the numbers of women engaged in their operational roles.
In 2017, Sara was recognised in the Australian Exceptional Women in Mining awards by the Minerals Council of Australia based on her contribution to the success of women in the mining industry and her ability to achieve a directorship in the Mining Industry.
